Solar Impulse Visits STL!

Have you heard of the Solar Impulse plane? The HB-SIA airplane is the predecessor to HB-SIB which will hopefully be the first solar airplane to circumnavigate the globe! Solar Impulse A is flying across America and landed in St. Louis on Wednesday. I work right by the airport and got tickets to run over and check it out during lunch! It was pretty impressive to see in person. It looks so fragile which is kind of the point. It weighs about the same as a standard car but has the wingspan of 208 feet!

The max speed is just over 50mph so the Solar Impulse isn't going anywhere fast. But for the creators behind the plane the purpose is the message.

You can watch it land in St. Louis here. I think it kind of looks like a superhero flying through the sky with all the lights on the wing. Maybe glow in the dark superman or something, idk there is a reason I don't write comic books...

And here is a neat video of the plane taking off.

They also have some solar bikes that generate energy!

One more awesome picture, a panorama!

What big plans do you have for the weekend?
We are going to see Hanson (mmm bop is the only song I know)!
Follow on Facebook for exciting Hanson updates tomorrow!

    1. I know isn't that nuts and it weighs so little! They actually had supports holding the wings up in the hangar which would make me a bit nervous if I was the pilot!

    1. Tomorrow is actually the last day for it at Lambert but it has stops in NYC and Washington DC coming up! I work about 2 miles from the airport so it seemed worth taking a long lunch break to visit, and it didn't disappoint!
